What does casual dating mean? What the apps' labels say
Casual dating means no exclusivity and no agreed long-term track, by mutual understanding. The apps' own intent labels split 'casual' three ways.
Casual dating means seeing someone, or several people, without exclusivity and without an agreed track towards a long-term relationship, by mutual understanding. It may or may not involve sex. What it does not involve is a promise. On dating apps, “casual” is split across several intent labels, and they do not all mean the same thing.
This is an evergreen explainer. The definition does not move with the news, and the app wording below is quoted from the apps’ own pages, each carrying its own date, all read by this desk on 15 October 2026.
What does casual dating mean in practice?
Three parts do the work. It is non-exclusive by default: neither person has agreed to stop seeing others. It has no agreed destination: nobody is working towards moving in, meeting the family or a ring. And it rests on mutual understanding, which is the part people skip. Two people having the same dates can be in two different arrangements if one of them thinks it is casual and the other thinks it is the slow start of something serious.
It overlaps with, but is not the same as, friends with benefits (a friendship first, with sex added) or a situationship (an arrangement nobody has named). Casual dating is named. That is its point.
What does casual mean on a dating app?
On the apps, “casual” is not a free-text mood. It is a setting, and each operator words it differently. Of the three ranking explainers read during research for this post (Wikipedia, Candle and MyTherapist), none lists any app’s intent options in the text read. This table does.
| App and source | Wording the source uses | Which options mean “casual” |
|---|---|---|
| Tinder, Relationship Goals release, 14 Dec 2022 | Long-term partner; Long-Term, open to short; Short-term, open to long; Short-term fun; New friends; Still figuring it out | Short-term fun; Short-term, open to long |
| Hinge, Mexico launch release, 24 Sept 2025 | A life partner, a long-term relationship, something shorter-term, or still figuring it out (Hinge’s prose, not its in-app label text) | Something shorter-term |
| Bumble, support article on commitment | Long-term relationship, life partner, marriage, ethical non-monogamy, intimacy without commitment, fun and casual dates | Fun and casual dates; intimacy without commitment |
Three caveats keep the table honest. Tinder’s list is what its December 2022 announcement said; this desk has not confirmed the current in-app list on a 2026 Tinder page. Hinge’s exact label strings were not on the Hinge pages read, so the row quotes Hinge’s own description. And the Bumble list comes from an advice article, not a settings reference, so it may not be complete. Bumble’s help centre refused a direct request; its text was read through a search provider’s scrape.
Why is “casual” not one thing?
Put the labels side by side and casual splits three ways.
Short-term, but open. Tinder’s “Short-term, open to long” says: nothing promised, but I would not run from more. Hinge’s “something shorter-term” sits closest to this in tone.
Short-term fun. Tinder’s “Short-term fun” and Bumble’s “fun and casual dates” say: dates for their own sake, no plan attached.
No-commitment intimacy. Bumble’s “intimacy without commitment” is the most explicit of the three. It names a physical relationship without commitment, which “fun” does not.
Those are different offers. Someone on “open to long” who matches someone on “intimacy without commitment” has agreed on the word casual and on very little else. The useful move is to say which one you mean, in the label and then in words.
People do read the labels. Tinder said in its 2022 release that 72% of its members were looking for someone who knows what they want. Hinge’s 17 December 2025 newsroom release said 83% of Millennial and 75% of Gen Z Hinge daters say they check someone’s Dating Intention before liking them. Both are the operators’ own figures. Bumble’s article says you can choose to only see people whose intentions match yours, and change your intention at any time.
None of the app pages read says the platform verifies an intent label. As far as those pages show, it is what the user says it is.
Casual dating vs serious dating: what actually differs?
Not the activities. Casual and serious daters go to the same bars. The difference is the agreed destination, and whether exclusivity is on the table. Whether Tinder’s rules let you spell out casual intent in a bio, rather than a label, is covered in our explainer on Tinder’s own rules. Why structured intent settings spread across the category is in our intent filters piece.
Casual dating FAQ
What does casual mean on a dating app?
It usually means a short-term intent label rather than a long-term one. Tinder’s 2022 Relationship Goals release listed Short-term fun and Short-term, open to long. Hinge describes an option for something shorter-term. A Bumble support article names fun and casual dates and intimacy without commitment. Each is a different promise, so pick the one that matches what you actually want.
What is casual dating vs serious dating?
Serious dating is aimed at a destination: exclusivity, a long-term relationship, sometimes marriage. Casual dating has no agreed destination and no exclusivity unless both people say otherwise. Neither is more honest than the other. The only dishonest version is the one where one person thinks it is casual and the other quietly expects it to turn serious.
What is the difference between dating and casual dating?
Dating is the broad activity of meeting someone to see whether you like each other. Casual dating is a mode of it in which both people have agreed, out loud or by a clear signal such as an app label, that nothing is promised beyond the next meeting. The agreement is the difference, not how often you meet.
Adults (18+) only. This desk explains how the apps label intent and does not publish sexually explicit material. Whatever label you pick, the agreement that counts is the one you make with the other person.
