Do dating apps use facial recognition for age verification?

Tinder, Grindr and Feeld all scan a selfie to check you are 18. Which is recognition, which is estimation, what is kept, and the vendor's error margin.

Some do, and the wording matters. Tinder’s Face Check uses one video selfie to estimate your age and to match your face to your profile photos and other accounts, which is facial recognition. Grindr’s UK check runs a FaceTec video selfie, with photo ID as the paired option; Feeld offers a live selfie or a phone confirmation.

This is an evergreen review of how the check works, read on 15 September 2026; our news post on which apps gate UK users covers the who.

Do dating apps use facial recognition for age verification, or estimation?

Three things can happen. Facial age estimation scores the face for an age band, with no ID and no comparison to anyone. Facial recognition, or face-match, compares the selfie with your profile photos, an ID or other accounts. A document check reads the date of birth off an ID. All three sit behind a liveness check, confirming a live person rather than a photo or a deepfake.

Does Tinder use facial recognition?

Yes, and more of it than the age question needs. Tinder’s Face Check FAQ says the selfie’s facial geometry is stored “to estimate your age, check your profile photos, reduce fraud, and help ensure that no other profile is using your likeness”. Match Group’s 22 October 2025 release made Face Check mandatory for new users in seven countries and California, with more states to follow.

The original video is promptly deleted, but two audit images and the age estimate stay until 90 days after the account closes, or a year if it was banned; FaceMaps and FaceVectors last the lifetime of the account and go within 30 days of closure. Where the scan is mandatory, the FAQ says you cannot delete your Verification Data without deleting your account, and the data may be shared between Match Group affiliates. That is the photo-verification badge trade at sign-up.

How does Grindr verify your age?

Its age-assurance page, updated 13 September 2026, offers a video selfie or one paired with official photo ID, names FaceTec as its supplier while handling data processing itself, and says documents and videos are deleted once the check completes, keeping only the method and result. Users outside the UK will not see the flow unless they open the app while visiting. Grindr’s help-centre article on age assurance returned 403 to this desk on 15 September 2026, as did Tinder’s help centre.

Which dating apps use a video selfie age check, and how accurate is it?

Feeld’s FAQ tells UK/Australia members to confirm they’re 18 with “a quick live selfie check or mobile phone confirmation”, handled by a partner it does not name, and says it stores no personal data from the process beyond what the account already holds. It is a separate flow from the identity check we compared with Pure’s.

Accuracy is the question the operator pages skip. Yoti’s facial age estimation page states 1.3 years accuracy for 13 to 17 year olds and 2.5 years across ages 6 to 70, says NIST has independently tested it, and that images are deleted immediately. Those are Yoti’s own numbers: its page, as read here, names no dating app, and none of the operators quoted here credits Yoti. The margin matters because the boundary that counts is 18, so Tinder and Grindr keep a document route in reserve.

Questions readers ask

Can dating apps tell your age from a selfie?

Only within a margin. Yoti, a facial age estimation vendor, states 1.3 years accuracy for 13 to 17 year olds and 2.5 years across ages 6 to 70, and says NIST has tested the technology. Those are Yoti’s figures for its own product; none of the three operator pages this desk read gives a margin of its own.

What happens if you fail age verification on a dating app?

The pages this desk read describe a document route, not a lockout. Grindr’s UK page offers a video selfie paired with an official photo ID, and Tinder’s FAQ says the FaceMap may be used as part of an ID verification check. Neither page, as read, says what a failed estimate triggers; both help-centre articles returned 403 on 15 September 2026.

Do dating apps keep your selfie or ID?

It depends on the app. Tinder deletes the video selfie promptly but keeps two audit images, the age estimate and a FaceMap, the last for the life of the account. Grindr says videos and documents are permanently deleted once the check completes, keeping only the method chosen and the result. Feeld says it stores no personal data from the process beyond what the account already holds.

The ledger

Verdict

Where there’s a choice, the least invasive route is Feeld’s phone confirmation, then Grindr’s video selfie, then any ID-plus-selfie path, with Tinder’s Face Check last on retention. No operator page read here gives failure rates. For adults, 18+ — this desk assesses how these products are built and moderated, not what anyone does with them.
