Why is Grindr asking me to verify my age? What its terms say

Grindr's 2026 terms tie the age check to where you are: a video selfie in the UK, a date of birth where no check is required. Read from Grindr's own pages.

Why is Grindr asking me to verify my age? Because of where you are. Grindr’s terms tie every account to the age assurance or declaration that applies in your jurisdiction. In the UK, visitors included, that means a one-time video selfie check before any access. Where no check is required, the terms describe a date of birth backed by moderation.

This desk read four Grindr documents on 23 September 2026: the Terms of Service, “Age Assurance in the UK”, “Keeping Minors Off Grindr” and its post backing the App Store Accountability Act. The three blog pages each carry an “Updated on: September 20, 2026” stamp and do not say what changed. Several VPN sellers rank for this question with bypass guides, and none of the ranking pages read for this piece quotes the terms in the text we could open. This piece answers from Grindr’s own documents and sells nothing.

What Grindr’s terms say about age verification

The 2026 Terms of Service split the world in two. Where the law requires it, Grindr “attempts to confirm” that users are 18 or over, and the terms add, in capitals, that these measures are imperfect. In other jurisdictions, Grindr collects a date of birth at account creation and uses automated and manual moderation to detect potential underage use. The terms say plainly that Grindr does not independently verify the accuracy of that birthdate.

So in the UK a check is not a sign that something is wrong with your account: it is the default for everyone opening the app there. Outside the UK, the terms and the minors page describe no selfie step.

When does Grindr ask you to verify your age?

Your situationWhat Grindr’s documents describeSource
Signing up in the UKPrompted during registration; no access until the check is completeUK page
Existing account, opening the app in the UKAsked to complete the check tooUK page
Visiting the UK from abroadThe same process applies once you open the app thereUK page
Check already done on this accountOnce per account, not repeatedUK page
Signing up anywhere elseDate of birth entered; an under-18 date blocks sign-up and bans the device until 18Terms; minors page
Using the app anywhere elseAutomated and manual moderation; device-level bans for suspected minors; underage reports prioritisedTerms; minors page

The last two rows describe moderation and bans, not a selfie prompt. Neither the terms nor the minors page says a moderation flag triggers a selfie check, so we will not tell you it does. If you are prompted outside the UK, the pages read here do not explain why. Our Australia piece found Grindr’s privacy policy saying a selfie may be required “in certain jurisdictions” without naming them.

What does Grindr’s UK age check ask for?

Grindr’s UK page, first published 25 June 2025, says the check began “in July” and reflects a requirement under the Online Safety Act. That is Grindr’s framing; we read no Ofcom finding on Grindr. You choose a video selfie alone, or a video selfie paired with an official photo ID. The page lists eleven accepted IDs, set out in our UK age verification guide. The biometric technology comes from FaceTec, while Grindr says it manages the data processing itself.

Does the check prove who you are?

No. It establishes that whoever holds the account was assessed as over 18. Grindr’s UK page says it keeps only the method chosen and a pass or fail, and it is not the photo-match badge some apps offer. How selfie age estimation differs from face matching is covered in our piece on facial recognition for age verification.

Why Grindr’s documents describe no US-wide check

Grindr’s App Store Accountability Act post argues for one check at the app store rather than one per app. It says the UK and EU are moving toward “fragmented rules”. The minors page lists what Grindr runs instead: the most age-restrictive Apple and Google store settings, a mandatory age gate, human moderation, AI tools, in-app underage reports, and reporting to NCMEC. It also names partnerships with Thorn, the Tech Coalition and the WeProtect Global Alliance.

Questions people ask about Grindr’s age check

Does Grindr keep my selfie or ID after age verification?

For the UK check, Grindr’s page says documents and videos are used only for age assurance, are encrypted during the process and are permanently deleted once it is complete. Grindr says it keeps only which method you chose and whether you passed or failed. The page does not say what FaceTec, whose technology runs the check, retains.

Is Grindr age verification required in the US?

The Grindr documents this desk read describe no US-wide check. Outside jurisdictions that require one, the terms describe a date of birth plus moderation. Grindr backs the App Store Accountability Act, Rep. John James’s bill, which would move age verification to the app store and pass developers a verified age signal. Grindr urges Congress to advance it, so it is a bill, not law. We read no US state law.

What happens if I fail Grindr’s age check?

The pages read do not walk through a failed attempt. The UK page says users there cannot access Grindr until the process is complete, and that Grindr records whether you passed or failed. The terms say that if you believe Grindr suspended or terminated your account in error, you can contact help@grindr.com at any time.

Can I use Grindr without verifying my age?

Not in the UK: Grindr’s page says there is no access until the check is complete, and it applies to visitors who open the app there. Where no check is required, the terms ask for a date of birth that Grindr does not independently verify, but you represent in accepting them that it is accurate. This desk does not advise VPNs or any other way round the check.

The short version

On the documents read, the prompt is about geography: the UK law Grindr cites, applied to anyone opening the app there. For an adult it is a one-time check Grindr calls fast and, by Grindr’s account, leaves only a pass or fail behind. If you are under 18, Grindr is not for you, and its terms and age gate say so.
